AUTOMATIC LAYOUT WITH INDESIGN AND EASYCATALOG
EasyCatalog for Adobe InDesign allows you to create an automated layout for your documents, catalogs, directories, technical data sheets, product sheets by linking your document to a data source in InDesign. In just a few clicks, after creating templates (graphical zones where you can insert data), automatically fill your document with your product data. You can also easily update your data in InDesign so you’re always up to date.
What does EasyCatalog offer?
InDesign’s EasyCatalog plug-in covers a wide range of publication possibilities. While it is usually used for the automatic production of product catalogs in retail and distribution, it also allows you to quickly produce technical data sheets, product sheets, price lists, labels, translations of catalogs, etc.
Integrated into theAdobe InDesign interface, the graphic designer can keep using the same work tool and will therefore not be disturbed in his daily tasks. EasyCatalog is an intuitive tool intended for any graphic designer who knows how to use InDesign and does not require any knowledge of programming or coding. Everything is done through the EasyCatalog palette which allows you to move the desired product data to any place on your page(s). After a quick training on the tool, it is then possible to generate documents automatically, with cleaned and secured data.

EasyCatalog is an additional plug-in to InDesign developed by the British company 65bitSoftware. It is fully integrated into the Adobe layout software and blends completely into the interface. EasyCatalog has been the leader in page layout automation for many years. It is used in the DTP process by large brands, large groups, small and medium-sized companies, but also by communication agencies, advertisers, and graphic designers, freelance or not.
How does it work?
The operating principle of Interactiv’ Publisher (including EasyCatalog) is simple: it is an advanced and intelligent publishing database. It allows automatic laying out with Adobe InDesign and Excelfor example.
The data is imported from various sources: Excel, CSV, ODBC connection, XML… You will thus have access to your prices, descriptions, characteristics…, directly in your layout software.
Once the data has been imported, an EasyCatalog palette will be created: it is a replica of your data directly available in InDesign in the form of a table
Once the data is integrated in InDesign, you need to create a presentation model for the products. This is called a product template. It consists of blocks made of text, images, and of InDesign tables. This layout template is linked with “tags” to the data palette.
All that remains to be done is to link the data palette to the product template. Manually or automatically, the products are then inserted into the pages with the correct styles and formatting.
A readjusting phase is sometimes necessary: management of blocs, image cropping, management of special cases… The graphic designer remains as free to work as before. The shape or styles can, of course, be modified after assembly: the link with the source will still be preserved.

The other advantage is to be able to ensure the integrity of your data, one way or the other. If the data is right in the database, it will then be right in the catalog and vice versa.

Direct import
Mass integration of data in InDesign: this data can come from various sources. EasyCatalog can retrieve data from an Excel file, a product database, a CSV, an XLS or an XML flow. The data in your document is thus, in a safe way, the same as the data in your source and mistakes are avoided.
